Melbourne is a city worth going all year round, so there’s never a bad time to visit! However, don’t forget that Australia’s winter comes around July – August, when it can get a little chilly. Follow some of the sports
Melbourne plays host to a number of sporting activities throughout the year, so simply choose your pleasure and go nuts! The cricket is held here each summer with Melbourne playing host to the one day internationals as well as the Ashes. Watching cricket here is excellent not only for the pleasure of the sport, but of the atmosphere, with the locals and visitors alike enjoying each other’s company in the scorching sun, washing it all down with a beer or two.
For a little more back and forth in your sport, Melbourne also hosts the Australian Open at Melbourne Park, where you might get the chance to see some of your favourite stars including Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray, the Williams sisters or Roger Federer.
Other sports on offer in Melbourne throughout the year include the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix held in March, Australian Rules Football, or even the Melbourne Cup; the world’s richest horse race, held on the first Tuesday of November each year for the casual racing fans, maybe looking to put a bet on.
Enjoy some culture
Melbourne is considered Australia’s culture capital, with so much on offer throughout the year including a number of famous performing arts festivals held all over the city. Here you can enjoy some world famous ballet, or visit the Princess Theatre for a great musical experience. Some of the great spots to enjoy some culture include the National Gallery of Melbourne hosting a great collection of international art, Federal Square’s Australian Centre for the Moving Image, also a great place to relax and watch people as they pass. The Southbank area also provides some contemporary art institutes. Aboriginal heritage can also be discovered in various forms, notably in the tour through the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, a real treat for those with green fingers.
Food and Drinks
Melbourne is culturally inspired not only by its aboriginal past but also from its European heritage. This has done a lot in moulding the food and drink on offer in Melbourne and the rest of Australia. Melbourne has a host of gothic inspired laneways which host a number of market stalls and sellers. Also dotted around are a number of cafes producing delicious brews. World renowned restaurants have also set up shop here in Melbourne, including the famous Nobu, as well as the Botanical, or the Becco for those with a rich pallet. The food on offer here ranges from Italian which can be found in Carlton, Vietnamese in Richmond, Spanish and Tapas in Fitzroy or simply get your own local produce from the Queen Victoria Market held on Saturdays.
Melbourne is also a great location for night hot spots for all tastes, whether you’re after a cold beer or a delicious cocktail. Chinatown is a popular area, as is Little Collins Street where you can enjoy the bustling atmosphere and pick up a little bite to eat at the same time. Jazz lovers can also rejoice as there are a number of bars catering to Melbourne’s rich jazz history.

Pull out your gold card and go wild in the famous shopping districts of Melbourne, including the high-end district of Chapel Street in Pahren where you can pick up a number of designer labels to add to your collection.
