What?! Yes, fighting with tomatoes. The Tomatina fight, originally a Spanish event, imported to North America and it is what the name implies. A crowd gets together and (safely) throws very soft tomatoes at each other. The tomatoes are too ripe to sell so it’s not a waste of food and there are no “tomato projectiles” allowed,so it’s good, safe fun.
If you decide to attend a Tomatina fight, the best advice you can get is to wear old sneakers with good soles that you won’t mind discarding later. People always show up in flip-flops,thinking they can just rinse off after the fight. What happens is they end up slipping on tomatoes and spend their time trying to stay on their feet instead of having fun.
You’ll have a great time at a Tomatina fight if you’re the kind of person who loved playing in mud puddles as a child. You get messy, very, very messy, but its very good time. The best part is being able to brag to friends that you have not only heard about the Tomatia, or tomato fights, but you were an active participant. If they’ve never heard of one, throw a soft tomato at them so they get an idea what they are missing. Make sure you only throw tomatoes at friends with a good sense of humor and not when they are wearing their best clothes.
